MaX updates its Training Booklet with activities from 2023–2026

MaX has published a new edition of its Training Booklet, now extended to cover the period 2023–2026. The updated publication includes the most recent MaX schools and offers a broader view of the training activities developed over the course of the project.


Training has always been closely connected to the scientific and technical work carried out within MaX. Developing software that can perform efficiently on increasingly powerful HPC systems is one part of the challenge; making sure that researchers are able to use these tools confidently, understand their possibilities and apply them to real scientific problems is another.

For this reason, MaX has combined software development with a wide range of schools, workshops, hackathons and other training activities. These initiatives have been designed for researchers with different backgrounds and levels of experience, from participants discovering a code or methodology for the first time to more advanced users interested in specific computational approaches, optimisation strategies or HPC workflows.

Many of the activities included in the booklet are directly linked to the MaX flagship codes (Quantum ESPRESSO, YAMBO, SIESTA, BigDFT, and FLEUR). Training sessions often bring users into direct contact with the developers and researchers behind these codes, creating space not only for instruction, but also for discussion, experimentation and feedback.

This practical dimension is an important part of the MaX training approach. Rather than simply presenting software as a finished tool, many of the activities invite participants to work with it, understand how it behaves in different contexts and explore the scientific questions it can help address.

MaX Training Booklet 2023–2026 brings these experiences together in a single publication. It documents the schools and other activities organised during the project, the topics addressed and the community of researchers, lecturers, developers and participants involved.

Seen as a whole, the booklet also provides a useful picture of how training has developed alongside MaX itself. As computational materials science and HPC continue to evolve, the need to share methods, practical knowledge and technical expertise becomes just as important as the software infrastructure supporting the research.
