The SARS-CoV-2 virus has continuously evolved, producing new variants that impact public health and vaccine effectiveness. The early identification of potentially dangerous mutations can help researchers and policymakers respond more quickly to emerging threats. Traditional methods for studying viral mutations are slow and require significant resources, making it challenging to keep up with the rapid evolution of the virus.

By extracting and enhancing a mini-app from MaX lighthouse code Quantum ESPRESSO, researchers focused on performance-critical components to unlock new levels of efficiency. The work demonstrates how industry and science can join forces to advance materials research and HPC technology in Europe, ensuring readiness for exascale computing and beyond.
