Bring Computer Architecture Experts to Achieve Success in eXascale Journey

Filippo Spiga is key members of MaX from ARM enthusiastically share their contribution and how they could add value to the success of the project.

“ARM will make available our system design expertise and co-design methodologies to prepare European flagship material science simulation software for an eXascale future.”

Innovative Aspects Shared with MaX

ARM is actively pursuing how new computing architectures can evolve toward more heterogeneous high-performance solutions.

New heterogeneous computing architectures and related programming models may put enormous pressure on software development but, at the same time, open up an incredible window of opportunity to co-design (e.g. new vector units, new accelerator, exploit variable precision arithmetic, etc).

By working in collaboration with science-domain experts and application performance experts, Arm aim to actively support Europe to achieve success in its eXascale journey.

Their Role as MaX Partner

Their role in MaX is mainly around technology as ARM will bring expertise in computer architectures, in-depth understanding of workload and system-on-chip design space exploration using open-source tools. In particular, they will look at modelling scenarios and workload-driven design exploration to better understand how some key computer and memory technologies can be assembled together to achieve maximum performance.

It is also very important to highlight that historically ARM does believe and actively support open-source. In Max-2, ARM will promote the usage of simulation tools that can be accessed and customized without too limiting restrictions. Alongside ARM suite of products for HPC (compiler and numerical libraries).

Importance of MaX and their contribution to the future Horizon Europe

MaX-2 aggregates the majority of the European-based world-wide experts in the field of material science and quantum chemistry. By following the success of MaX-1 and thanks to direct insights of some strategic choices made in the context of the European eXascale programme, MaX core partners have asked ARM to join MaX-2 to directly contribute and influence the co-design opportunities around flagship European material science codes.

ARM will make possible to better understand the role of compute architecture and how things interact at low-level. These learnings will complement the effort in scientific codes modernization at high-level. We believe this a great example of complete co-design cycle, from very top to bottom and vice-versa. Both Arm and the border consortium also hope other Centre of Excellence in other scientific domains will benefit from the lessons learnt disseminated by MaX-2 in this area.
