The EuroHPC JU supercomputer has been unveiled at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, opening the door to a new era of scientific breakthroughs.
Installed at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) and inaugurated in December 2023, MareNostrum 5 is one of the pre-exascale supercomputers in the high-performance computer network promoted by the European Commission.
The new infrastructure represents a milestone of sorts and leverages an investment of 202M euros aimed at speeding up solutions to particularly complex problems in a variety of fields.
The inauguration of the supercomputer gathered researchers, technicians, stakeholders, as well as politicians including Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government of Spain.
Hosted at and maintained by the BSC, the powerful supercomputer will ensure further and stronger synergies among European research institutes and industries to achieve innovative research on medical research, vaccine development, virus spread simulations, climate research, Artificial Intelligence, and big data processing applications.
This is only the beginning of a new era: « MareNostrum 5 paves the way for the next MareNostrum 6, a milestone that could be a reality in a few years’ time » says Mateo Valero, BSC Director.
